Decommissioning and Upgrading Rack Systems Within Data Centers

Case Study Summary

Data Center Server Room Identification and upgrades have unique challenges that set them apart from other projects. Brady is proud to provide custom solutions for contractors and site managers.

  • Facility managers are constantly challenged to maintain performance while upgrading equipment. Whether you do this work inhouse or use a contractor, labor costs are a constant concern.
  • Brady products like the A6500, A6200i7100 and M410 help improve labeling productivity while also helping maintain company standards, even when hiring 3rd party contractors.
  • Our ongoing partnership allows us to introduce new products and workflows to customers, creating greater efficiencies.
Brady has been working with this major software company for more than 25 years, providing labeling solutions and services. Over the past decade, the company has begun building their own data centers to hyperscale with their tech advantages. This led to an evolution in our working relationship: we shifted from being a product supplier to a solutions partner. With hundreds of new data centers breaking ground each year, our customer turned to us to help them find efficiencies at scale.

Efficiencies in Cable Labeling

After analyzing their construction process, it was clear that manual labeling was standing in the way of project efficiency. With strict labeling requirements and thousands of wires requiring identification, labeling by hand was consuming hundreds of man hours and introducing unacceptable error rates.

To help them get more efficient and accurate in the wire labeling process, we recommended the A6500 Wraptor and the A6200 Wraptor - two Brady products that take a series of labor-intensive, inefficient processes and turn them into a modern, automated process.

Our print and apply solutions allowed contractors to cut labeling time in half, delivering significant labor savings in less than a month. On top of that, electrical contractors were able to focus on the technical work they were hired for instead of tedious manual labeling tasks.

Server Rack Organization

In dense server racks, high-visibility labeling is important for easy identification. When every minute of downtime costs thousands of dollars, finding the issue quickly is key.

To facilitate quick identification, we implemented the i7100 Industrial Label Printer alongside our B-593 raised labels. This combination provided the durability of traditional engraved plates with the agility of on-demand, on-site printing. The result? Labels that deliver high-contrast visibility with an aggressive adhesive specifically engineered to meet the temperature standards for high-performance data centers.

Project Challenges

Data center sites operate under strict, no-wireless protocols to prevent unauthorized access. To meet these requirements, Brady deployed the A6200 Wraptor and A6500 Wraptor benchtop units along with our M410 portable printers. Each product operates with full standalone functionality with the capability to connect to PCs via a secure, wired connection.

By providing the same suite of products for each new site, we were also able to prevent labeling inconsistencies that were coming from hiring various contractors. Instead of adding on to maintenance and repair times, we were able to provide a standardized identification protocol that ensures long-term clarity and minimizes the cost of future repairs.

Work with Brady

A partnership with Brady extends far beyond the initial deployment. Our team is here for you at every stage — from initial specification to ongoing process refinement — working to eliminate hurdles and customize solutions that grow with your operational demands.

Today, we’re continuing to work with our customer to identify workflow enhancements using our new i4311 Transportable Industrial Desktop Label Printer. The high-volume capabilities and 4.25" label width are bringing new opportunities to facility identification.
